Our Selection for June:

This month we have selected wines that suit the season, a light red, a beautiful summer rosé and a litre bottle white for when you are picnicking at the beach and a 75cl just isn't quite enough!

Le Rosé du Château de Pibarnon Bandol 2019

Be transported to the south of France with this characterful rosé from Bandol in Provence.  The terraced vineyard of Château de Pibarnon reaches 300 meters facing the Mediterranean, forming a natural, south-east-facing bowl.  The soil is clay, limestone and white chalk.  Farming is certified organic with a few biodynamic principles.  Harvest is completed manually by a small team of regulars.

The blend is comprised of 65% Mourvèdre and 35% Cinsault.  The Mourvèdre is saignée with only free run juice used, giving the wine body, complexity and freshness.  The Cinsault is press juice, providing the fruit and the flesh.  After blending and fermentation, the wine is aged in tank for 6 months.

Rated 93 point by Vinous - “Shimmering orange-pink.  Powerful, mineral-accented white peach, raspberry and melon scents, along with building citrus pith and floral nuances.  Palate-staining red berry, blood orange, nectarine and lavender flavors deftly meld depth and energy.  Shows strong tension and repeating mineral character on the strikingly long finish, which leaves a suave floral note behind.”

And don’t forget that Bandol is not just for rosé.  We have two vintages (2017 & 2018) of red wine from this same producer.

Müller-Catoir Gutswein NV

Gutswein is the base classification in the VDP for house wines that are blended from a variety of estate-grown fruit.  (You’ll always know a VDP wine from the eagle on the foil.)

This wine is a blend of Riesling (at least 85%), with lesser amounts of Rieslaner, Scheurebe and Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc) from Pfalz.  Fear not, this wine is trocken - dry!  Although the grapes come entirely from the 2018 harvest, you will not find a vintage on a bottle of Gutswein.  This wine is vegan, comes from organically cultivated grapes and, even at this level, the fruit is hand-harvested.  This wine offers great value!  Dry and racy (did we mention it’s dry) with a solid backbone of acidity and great mineral depth.  Citrus pith and zest dominate the palate with mineral notes evident on the nose.  A match made in heaven for shellfish or oysters.  With this 1 litre bottle, there is more of this wine to enjoy!

Domaine du Pélican Arbois Trois Cépages 2018

Domaine du Pélican is Domaine Marquis d’Angerville’s project in the Jura region of France.  Domaine Marquis d’Angerville has been one of the leading estates based in Volnay for more than three generations but, in Jura, the owners must contend with the challenges of new grapes and new terroirs.  The name is a reference to the pelican on the crest of the city of Arbois.

Arbois in eastern France is the Jura wine region's most-prolific appellation for red, white and rosé wines.  ‘Trois Cépages’ translates to ‘three grape varieties’.  This blend is comprised of Pinot Noir (adopted from nearby Burgundy) and Trousseau and Poulsard (both indigenous to Jura).  The grapes are 100% de-stemmed and fermented in vats.  Maceration time is around one week.  The wine is then aged in mostly neutral 228-litre barrels for 10 months before being bottled.  Rated 90 points by Robert Parker's Wine Advocate - “Despite the low alcohol (12.5%), it has a ripe nose, with notes of cherries and orange peel, and a light palate.”  We suggest pairing this wine with chicken or turkey.

This is the only wine in Domaine du Pélican’s portfolio to feature Pinot Noir, a grape which is of much greater significance in d’Angerville’s Volnay and it is a Wine Club exclusive.  We do have a handful of other wines available from Domaine du Pélican - one red (Poulsard), the others white (Chardonnay and Savagnin).  All of Pélican's wines are made in a topped up, non-oxidative style.
