The Lopez family who own A Coroa have played a key role in the resurgence of Godello in its native Valdeorras in north-western Spain where it has been grown since Roman times. For many years they owned a vine nursery, supplying the region’s local winemakers with new vines as the ancient variety slowly gained popularity. In 2002 Angel Lopez decided to start making his own Godello wines and the family now have 10 hectares of vineyards on A Rua’s steep hillsides. This magnificent single vineyard Godello is sourced from vines planted in 1940 on top quality granitic soils which are farmed organically and harvested by hand in small baskets. This is where the wine gets its name from since 200 baskets or cestos are needed to harvest this vineyard each year. In the winery the must is fermented in stainless steel tanks and then matured on the lees for 9 months in old large oak casks to add extra complexity and body.
